Having served as Master of Timothy Dwight College since 1978, he is currently the longest serving master of a residential college at Yale. Thompson is America`s most prominent scholar of African art, and has presided over exhibitions of African art at the National Gallery in Washington D. C. The National Gallery of Art is a national art museum, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Open to the public free of charge, the museum was established in 1937 for the people of the United States of America by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, with funds for construction and a substantial art collection donated by Andrew W. Mellon. Additionally, the core collection has major works of art donated by Paul Mellon, Ailsa Mellon Bruce, Lessing J. Rosenwald, Samuel Henry Kress, Rush Harrison Kress, Peter Arrell Brown...
